Marisa B. Sanders, Ph.D.

Marisa is a patent attorney whose practice focuses on patent preparation, prosecution, and counseling in the areas of pharmaceuticals, chemistry, materials science, and biochemistry. She has experience advising a diverse client base, including individual inventors, startups, pharmaceutical companies, universities, and tech companies on creating and protecting their patent portfolios.

Marisa has extensive experience managing U.S. and foreign patent portfolios. She regularly conducts freedom-to-operate, patentability, and due diligence analyses.

Marisa’s patent and research experience spans a wide range of technologies, including small molecule pharmaceuticals, polymers, nutraceuticals, magnetic materials, sequencing technologies, medical foods, batteries, solar cells, cosmetics, pesticides, antibody drug conjugates, and superconductors.

In addition to her patent work, Marisa has experience in trade secrets, including trade secret litigation.

Marisa obtained her Ph.D. in Chemistry and Materials Science from Princeton University under the advisement of Dr. Robert J. Cava. Her Ph.D. work focused on the synthesis and characterization of novel oxide materials with applications in batteries, quantum computers, clean energy, and magnetic storage devices.

Marisa received her J.D., magna cum laude, from Seton Hall University School of Law, where she was inducted to the Order of the Coif. During law school, Marisa served on the university’s moot court board.

Marisa received her B.S. in Chemistry, magna cum laude, with a minor in English from The College of New Jersey, where she was inducted to Phi Beta Kappa.

Marisa currently serves on the American Chemical Society’s Committee on Intellectual Property (CIP). She is also a member of the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists (NYSCC) and the New York Intellectual Property Law Association (NYIPLA).

Prior to joining Lerner David, Marisa worked at two AMLaw 50 law firms, during which she spent several years as a patent agent.
