Some say that it is not whether you win or lose but how you play the game. While that may be true for some school sports, clients demand results and, for Christian, that usually means winning hard-fought battles in the court room trenches. As a first generation American raised in the house of a state champion wrestler, Christian always plays to win. Over the years, he has been fortunate to represent and win for a diverse group of clients. Whether it be ensuring that a beverage company airs a Super Bowl commercial, enabling a manufacturer of industrial UV reactors to disinfect drinking water, grounding a private jet to get a fuel supplier paid, protecting a luggage company against counterfeiters, or ensuring delivery of a blockbuster drug to consumers, winning matters to clients. Christian’s bond with each of his clients is that they either win together or each hears from him early that a “win” under the circumstances may look much different than a gold medal. Christian was raised to be honest, direct, and to win and that is what clients appreciate from him most.
Christian is a first-chair civil trial lawyer. But he will tell you that he is a well-paid translator of legal jargon and complex subject matter for everyday people who make up juries or sit as judges. After graduating from Bucknell with an English degree, he wondered (and wandered) to figure out how to best use a basic English degree in a way that could earn a living for a future family. Law school fueled his passion to debate and, after law school, he was exposed to complicated client technologies. He quickly learned that his true skill was translating technology and legal mumbo jumbo into plain English for people in a common sense way. At Lerner David, he teams up with a deep bench of technical experts to create balanced trial teams across most any science affecting IP rights. Here, tech savvy colleagues teach and Christian translates.
No two people in the world are exactly the same and, in Christian’s experience, no two problems are either. Christian takes pride in delivering creative solutions to the challenges faced by clients rather than taking a cookie-cutter approach. Depending on the issue, that could mean doing nothing or waging full scale litigation war. As a trial lawyer and former General Counsel at a tech company, Christian is experienced in both leading and managing complex litigations and commercial matters. His experience in the courtroom and boardroom put clients at ease and enable in-house lawyers to comfortably rely on his judgment to lead them to a practical solution. Christian’s expertise has also led to his appointment by a former Attorney General and Governor of New Jersey to act as Special IP Counsel in defense of state-wide allegations of infringement.
Winning in the trial trenches, particularly on intellectual property matters, often requires urgency and the ability to be quick on your feet. In New Jersey and on the sports field, that means hustle. From early in his career as a litigator, Christian has had his feet to the fire both defending and prosecuting expedited actions for emergent relief. At the ITC, he obtained the extraordinary relief of a General Exclusion Order for a leading cell phone accessories manufacturer and then defended that GEO on emergency applications to the Federal Circuit and in other international venues. In federal courts across the country, Christian has led teams through expedited discovery and preliminary injunction hearings on misuse of trade secrets and other IP infringement claims ranging from flight-planning software to non-dairy frozen products to exotic car clubs to back pocket stitching designs on jeans. In every expedited matter, Christian hustles smartly for his clients.
